Light-speed data: how photonic chips are powering the AI era

By adminNo Comments

Every time you run an AI model, stream a video, or send a message, data moves. A lot of it, very fast, across enormous infrastructure. The systems making this possible are under serious strain, and photonic chips are increasingly the answer. But this is not just a story about technology. It is a story about the people building it, and the careers being created in the process.

The problem no one talks about

To meet anticipated growth in data demand, data centres will need to be roughly ten times more energy efficient than they are today. Mobile technologies will need to be approximately twenty times more efficient. Traditional transistor scaling is running out of road. The industry needs a fundamentally different approach.

Photonic Integrated Circuits use light instead of electricity to transmit data. Light moves faster, generates less heat, and carries far more information simultaneously than electrons through copper. Co-Packaged Optics moves the fibre connection closer to the switching chip in a data centre, cutting energy consumption dramatically. Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing sends multiple data streams simultaneously along a single fibre using different wavelengths of light. The applications are already arriving.

Reaching millions

Kees Franken, co-founder of Sabratha, captures where this is heading. His company aims to revolutionize the 6G fronthaul network with their disruptive technology, developing and launching a product that can reach millions of people around the world. It’s powered by photonic chip technology they developed themselves: chips that use the interaction between light and sound to isolate signals in crowded environments like stadiums and concert halls.

The 6G opportunity and beyond

The research community is already focused on 6G, and photonics is central to how it will work, enabling smart antennas, reducing transceiver sizes, and making the dense base station networks of future mobile connectivity feasible. Beyond that, photonics plays a foundational role in quantum computing, a technology with the potential to transform cybersecurity, drug discovery, and materials science. The groundwork is being laid now, and the people who will build it are starting their careers today.

AI infrastructure, 6G, quantum computing: real companies, real products, real job openings. If you want to work on the technology that keeps the world connected and makes AI actually run, integrated photonics is where that work happens.
